Welcome to Westminster

Westminster Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in American. The PCA is committed to the proclamation of God's infallible word. We believe the best summary of the Bible's teaching is found in the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms (written by the Westminster Assembly of the 17th century). We apply the historic doctrines of the Christian faith to daily life, believing that these teachings still meet the needs of modern society.

We invite you to join with us as we march boldly into the future to make an impact in the lives of individuals and the culture of this city. Our Lord's command to His people is to go into all the world and make disciples of the nations. Our purpose as a church is to obey our Lord's command, teaching people to place their trust in Jesus Christ alone for their salvation and to apply the teachings of Christ to every area of their lives.

O Church Mission

In the book of Acts, we read that the early church "continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers" (Acts 2:42). Westminster Presbyterian Church strives to be characterized by those same qualities and activities.

Westminster provides an atmosphere for the reverent worship of Almighty God. Our worship is characterized by reverence, singing, prayers, confession, the reading of the Holy Scripture, and the preaching of God's word. The main purpose of our worship services is to exalt the Lord of heaven and earth, so that people might see His glory and be overwhelmed by His majesty. We pay close attention to the content of the hymns that we sing, believing that we must sing truth, as well as speak it.

Since we believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, the only rule of faith and practice, containing all that we need to know for salvation and life, the better part of each service is given over to the reading and preaching of God's word. The preaching at Westminster is devoted to a detailed exposition of Scripture. Additional opportunities are provided for participation in Bible study during the week in various locations throughout the city.

O Fellowship

Scripture commands that we love one another, bear one another's burdens, weep with those who weep, and rejoice with those who rejoice. In order to fulfill these commands, God's people must have fellowship with one another. Westminster is a warm congregation that reaches out to people so that we might encourage one another and minister to one another's needs. While our worship services, prayer meetings, and Bible studies enhance this closeness, the people of Westminster are known for opening their homes for people to enjoy times of friendship and sharing. Since the Scriptures often compare the gospel to a feast, the people of Westminster enjoy sharing meals with one another, maintaining the festive atmosphere of Christian fellowship. We also have several church-wide meetings each year where there is much food and opportunity for celebrating together our life in Christ.

O Communion

Westminster observes the sacrament of the Lord's Supper at least once a month. Our Confession of Faith states that the Lord's Supper exists for "the perpetual remembrance of the sacrifice of Himself in His death, the sealing of all benefits thereof unto true believers, their spiritual nourishment and growth in Him, their further engagement in and to all duties which they own unto Him, and to be a bond and pledge of their communion with Him and with each other, as members of His mystical body." Consequently, the observance of the Lord's Supper is extremely important in the life of our church.

While we encourage our people to maintain a devout life of private prayer, we also urge God's people to meet together frequently for prayer. There is a regular stated meetin for prayer on Wednesday nights in our sanctuary. While these prayer meetings have some Scripture reading and brief exposition, the majority of each prayer meeting is devoted to prayer.

O Evangelism

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6). Since there is no way for a person to be saved and have fellowship with God other than through Jesus Christ, he gave us the command to "make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19-20).

Westminster Presbyterian Church is devoted to fulfilling this task given to us by our resurrected Lord. We fulfill this command through the preaching and teaching of God's word. Also, we encourage our people to build relationships with those who do not know our Lord Jesus Christ, looking for opportunities to share with them His love and truth. Since our pastors' sermons are taped and printed, we also use these as means of outreach to present to others the gospel of Christ. As our church grows, we will implement many other means of obeying His great commission.

O Missions

Since we believe so strongly in obeying the command of Christ to preach the gospel to everyone, Westminster supports missionaries who labor in various places around the world.

O Other Activities

We believe that Christians should be involved in the culture in which they live. Therefore, we try not to burden our people with an endless stream of church activities. We want those people in our congregation who work to devote themselves to their jobs in such a way that they become the best examples of what an employee should be. We desire that those who are still continuing their education serve God by being diligent students. We also believe that families should have time to do things together.

One of the most effective forms of evangelism is nurturing relationships with those who do not know Christ. Christians should also be involved in community and political activities, striving to influence the culture through these means. One of the primary objectives of our church is to teach people how to accomplish all of these various tasks. Therefore, we give most of our time to preaching and teaching, equipping them to fulfill the commands of Christ wherever they might be, and giving them the freedom to accomplish their mission and bring glory to God in every place where God has given them responsibilities.

In order to equip our people to worship and serve God, Westminster offers many opportunities for learning and growth. Our Sunday School provides detailed instruction in the Bible and Christian doctrine. Each year we have a Vacation Bible School for our children which is well attended. We look for this ministry to grow enormously at our new site. We also have a children's choir rehearsal each Sunday evening to teach our youth how to glorify God in their singing. An Adult Choir usually performs Christmas and Easter Cantatas each year. All of the women in Westminster are considered to be members of our Women in the Church (WIC). These ladies are involved in various mercy ministries, Bible studies, and conferences which we share with other members of our denomination.

O English as a Second Language (ESL)

An opportunity that we offer to help you be involved in the culture is our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. With classes for each level of ability, ESL offers conversational English training to non-native English speakers. These classes are weekly and run through the normal school year. We could use your help. You could teach (there is training) or help in a number of other ways. Come and visit on a Tuesday night and see if this is one place the Lord would have you serve.

We especially encourage everyone to help us help others by telling people who might be interested in this. You can get business card size accouncement cards to pass out or leave in businesses. These are in the foyer along with flyers for handout or posting. Go to our ESL page for a printable flyer to pass out or put on bulletin boards and other information about English as a Second Language (ESL).

O Church Membership

Membership in Westminster Presbyterian Church is open to all who profess faith in Jesus Christ and believe the basic teachings of the Christian faith. If you would like to become a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, speak with the pastor to arrange a time to meet with our Ruling Elders. Our elders will be glad to meet with you in order to discuss church membership.
